Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

Someone needs to tell Senator Barack Obama that the Constitution only provides for one Vice President. Obama has dangled the Vice Presidency in front of three prominent female politicians in a Janus-faced strategy to gain their support.

A well-placed Democratic party source told me in New York on Saturday that Obama has offered the office of the Vice President to super delegates Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill. It is anyone's guess as to how many other super delegates have been given the same pitch.

Using the second highest office in the United States government as super delegate bait cheapens and disrespects the office and the Presidency. Or maybe Obama simply cannot make a decision. Either way, his mendacious behavior is disappointing for the presumptive standard bearer of the Democratic party.

Update: I invite members of the press to ask the aforementioned super delegates about Obama's offer.

Ahhh, that's a pretty flimsy basis for a diary, but OK.  Whatever gets the job done for you.  I'm not important enough to know "high ranking officials," but I've worked on presidential campaigns before.  This is the first time I've ever heard of someone "promising" multiple people the VP spot months before such a decision would actually be made.  So forgive me if I'm more than a bit skeptical.

More substantively, all of the individuals you named would make fantastic VP choices.  So I'm actually encouraged by that.

all of them, do you think they were each dumb enough to believe him?  The first vice-presidents club? I'll bet that this is news to Bill Richardson. Who else do you think he's promised it too?  As a Hillary supporter I'd say that none of them will do the trick for me. Nor would Bill Richardson, but I'd like to know who else he's promised, maybe one of them would be okay, on the off chance that he gets the nom.

Screw the vice presidency.  Once Hillary winds up with a majority of the popular vote she end up as our nominee AND as our next PRESIDENT.

After the way BO and his surrogates have so disrespected women during this campaign he's got a lot of nerve thinking he canwipe the slate clean by putting a woman on the ticket.

The rest of what I'm thinking would pribably get me in trouble so I'll stop at that.

This is really off the deep end, Alegre... "of course it's credible- it's just the sort of thing he would do!" Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President (2.00 / 2)

That's hilarious.

Look up "asherrem" on Daily Kos and see what you get, go ahead.  I believe it was one diary calling for all the bullshit to end, and a couple of comments, one reminiscing about my grandma who we lost two years ago to pancreatic cancer.

Look up my ID here and see what you get.

I am not a troll, have never been a troll, and don't even hate Hillary (and if you've ever read anything I've ever written you'd know that).

It's called humor.  You are your only source for this "story", so I apologize if I find it a bit comical.

He probably has told them he was considering them and for them to think about it. I would imagine he has said the same to a few men also. He has to have a list he is working on. Anyway, I don't believe anyone who says they have inside info that some Dem party source told them personally. LOL.

by Becky G on Sun May 11, 2008 at 05:00:48 PM EST

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President (2.00 / 7)

This was my first thought when I read this diary as well. Unless your source (giving the benefit of the doubt on the existence of, and exact wording used by, the source) was physically in the room each time the offer was made, I would assume each of the three mentioned (and I would think at least several others) was offered a spot on the short list of VP choices.

None of which is surprising, given these three appear on pretty much every armchair political analysts list of likely short list candidates.

I can't see Obama outright offering the VP spot to multiple people both because I'd like to think he has shown he's savvier than that kind of clumsy political move and because offering a short list spot does the same thing without poisoning the people who don't get the nod against him in the future.

reporters generally don't spend their time chasing down wild stories from incredible sources, such as those that regularly make the wrecked lists at MyDD, NoQuarter or Hillaryis44.

Wow. The fact that I now have no qualms about lumping this site in with those other two says worlds about the quality of discourse MyDD has sunk to.

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President (2.00 / 8)

Just out of curiosity, would picking an experienced and well-qualified individual who happens to be a woman satisfy you?  Because all of the names mentioned above are fantastic choices on their merits.  A point that your post seems to dismiss out of hand.

Senator Clinton would make a good VP choice.  So would other people.  What's wrong with considering other, well-qualified individuals if Obama does in fact win the nomination?

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President (2.00 / 8)

Please don't dismiss those women as tokens. Sen. McCaskill has served in public office for over 25 years, trailblazing her way through while saddled with a spouse who had three times the negatives of Bill Clinton and none of the positives. Hillary Clinton has accomplished a lot in her life, but I'd say Claire McCaskill's path was tougher.
