Hillary unveils ambitious anti-crime agenda

A little over a year ago, I moved to New York from Center City Philadelphia. It was distressing to me to see headlines about violence in Philadelphia on the news and to see communities in distress. Hillary Clinton is answering the call to make make our communities safer with her bold new anti-crime agenda that strengthens community policing efforts, crime prevention and prison reform. More after the jump.

Senator Clinton's plan sets an ambiguous goal: to cut the homicide rates in cities in half. It put 100,000 new police officers on the beat - with an emphasis on community policing and it reinvigorates the COPS program with new tactics and improved technology.

Hillary is parlaying the success of community policing to create so-called "community prosecutors," and will invest $250 million to make that happen and make urban neighborhoods safer. Deeper community involvement will help prosecutors break through the wall of silence.

Gang violence reduction grants and drug market elimination grant will provide funds for local institutions to fight gang related violence with emphasis on battling the menace of methamphetamine. No less than the Deputy Attorney General will have responsibilities to oversee DOJ-city partnerships under Hillary's plan.

Another priority is to crack down on gun illegal trafficking. The amount of violence attributed to gun related in Philadelphia alone is marked. I have personally heard the gun fire and seen the bodies while I was a college student in North Philadelphia.
Hillary will devote $1 billion to close the revolving door prison system and reduce the number of repeat offenders.

The plan reduces the prison population by reforming how the system attends to minor infractions by non-violent offenders by reforming drug diversion programs. It's simple: People who stay clean stay out of prison.

Corporate criminals will be rightfully placed behind bars. One of her first acts in office will be to direct her Attorney General to conduct a 90-day review of all deferred prosecution agreements.

The Federal government will help States make re-entry work to help prepare offenders for their return to their communities; prisoners will be reformed instead of warehoused. Clinton will seek to prevent crime through early interventions with at-risk children. Some aspects of it are increased after-school programs, mentoring programs and nurse home visitation.

What's more, she will protect children from exploitation and harassment online, and Clinton will cycle more resources to the Internet Crimes Against Children task forces. As an aside, she will also fight identity theft.

"It is a sad day in America when the President can find hundreds of billions of dollars to police another country's civil war, but cuts funding for police officers right here at home," said Clinton. "We deserve better. Our mayors like my friend Mayor Nutter [the mayor of Philadelphia] shouldn't be tackling this problem alone. At its core, my agenda is about responsibility. It's about the federal government living up to its responsibility to help restore order in our communities, pave the way for economic development and new jobs, and help our families feel safe in their homes and neighborhoods."

Glad to see your diary on this issue. I lived in nyc under guliani and altho he was rather universally despised on liberal side fo the fense, and did some delplorable stuff in this regard, he also put more police on the street and it resulted in a decrease in crime and the ability to travel around more freely

This is a crime bill that goes along way to reducing the root of crime. Great job, Hillary!

Thanks owl.  I wish the rest of the media gave a f**k.  It's this detailed explanations of her plans, coupled with her long-time experience, and standing up against almost insurmountable odds, that make me think that she can, more than anyone on the ticket, bring us back to some kind of sanity.  Perhaps Obama can pick up from where she leaves off in 2016.

Right now Obama is like the beautiful commercial, whereas she is the tried-and-true home remedies that have worked for ages.  We're faced with voting for an unknown substance vs. a known  substance that has held up for decades against the "Vast Right-wing Conspiracy".  Let's not forget she was the one who termed this phrase way, way, before it became mainstream.  She was attacked vigorously from all sides at that time.

She stands tall, today.  She deserves our vote for fighting the VRWC for at least 17 years - plus so much more.

Yeah, right.  She held up real easily in 1994 against the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" when Republicans wiped Democrats out of Congress and most local offices all over the country.

You can thank your Obama follower Dashle for that.  Dashle is going all ga ga over Barry.  Maybe he thinks that that will erase the memory of him and his buddy Gep standing up on the steps of the capitol saying, "Why can't we all just get along?"  Them with their sweet, trusting smiles, offering their hands to the Republicans.  Meanwhile the republicans were finalizing their plans to blow them out of the water.  Ask them why they were so fucking naive and pure, and were no match for the other side.

Don't forget the fact that she's one of two current presidential candidates, with nearly half of the country  voting for her - after all that you refer to.

There's just something about her that makes her popular to so many people, regardless of what you say.  Perhaps you ought to look into why so many people still love her.

Death Penalty? (none / 0)

Not seeing a mention. Has she renounced it?
